Chapter 31:
"There's Melanie!" I said pointing to the girl walking along the side of the road "Uh-oh. Doesn't look like things went too well"
When Michael and Melanie left I'd written a quick note to Mary-kate and Zac then left. I figured they'd like to be alone.
Aaron pulled the car over and I opened the door "Need a ride?" I asked her.
She turned to me her face streaked with tears "Yeah" she choked, nodding a little.
She climbed into the back seat and didn't say anything else. I decided not to ask her about what had happened.
"Where would you like us to take you?" Aaron asked.
Melanie gave him an address and he started in that direction. The rest of the ride was filled with silence.
---Melanie---
"Thanks for the ride" I said to Ashley and Aaron before they pulled away. I then turned and knocked on the door.
I heard familiar footsteps and then the door swung open. "Melanie?" Malcolm asked concerned.
"Malcolm" I started crying again and was unable to say anything else.
He didn't ask any questions. Just wrapped an arm around me and led me into the house.
He held me gently as I cried. It felt like hours before the sobs finally lessened and I was able to speak again "Michael broke up with me" I said sadly.
"Why?"
"Because of the tour. He wanted me to stay"
"The Jerk!" Malcolm said a little angrily.
I looked at him surprised.
"I'm sorry" He apologized "I know you loved the guy"
I nodded "A lot" I said quietly.
He gently brushed a lock of hair behind my ears "But you deserve better" He said "Someone who'll let you continue your own life without thinking of themselves"
I should have defended Michael, he really wasn't that selfish, but I didn't. I just looked up into Malcolm's eyes and gulped at the expression in them.
Before I realized what was happening he'd leaned closer and gently kissed me.
I felt like I'd just stepped into one of those day time soap operas, first my boyfriend dumps me then one of my best friends kissed me. This was really confusing.
What was more confusing was that I kissed him back. Really kissed him back.
Michael and I had just shared our good-bye kiss. This kiss however, could definitely be described as a hello kiss.
