Chapter 21:

---Zac---

I hailed a taxi and climbed in. I watched a plane take off as the taxi drove past the runway.

Mary-Kate was on that plane... leaving.

I will myself not to cry but nonetheless a tear ran down my cheek, before I quickly brushed it away.

---Ashley---

"Josh!" I called as I slammed the front door (unintenionally) "You here?"

"I think I'm here! It sure doesn't seem like heaven which means I haven't died of boredom quite yet" He muttered as he walked past me to the kitchen.

I followed "Is Vic back yet?"

"Nope" He took some milk from the fridge and set to making coffee "If she was I would have had SOMEONE to talk to!" He opened the coffee pot and found it empty.

"You were supposed to get coffee but you got the Christmas tree instead. Not that I mind"

"Oh. Well... you shouldn't be drinking coffe anyway"

I glared at him.

"Well, it's true" He motioned to my stomach, which I can't deny is starting to show.

"I have to pick Mary-Kate up from the aiport. Can you make dinner?"

"Mary-Kate?"

"Long story. I'll tell you later" I said as I started for the door.

"Whatever" He muttered.

---Melanie---

I could see Michael scanning the crowd for me. But miraculously he didn't see me. I slipped outside and hailed a taxi.

I had only a matter of time to get what I needed from the apartment. And then....

Well, I guess it's time for a new home.

---Mary-Kate---

"Ashley!" I called as I ran through the crowds at the airport.

She ran toward me and we hugged as tightly as we could wighout crushing Anna.

"I.... " I started to cry again "Can I stay with you tonight?"

She thought for a moment "My house is kinda packed. How about I come to yours?"

"OK" I sniffled.

---Zac---

Someone knocked on my bedroom door and before I could answer Taylor blond head peeked in.

I sighed "What do you want?" I could mentally see myself back in my teens, trying to have a moment to myself but constantly being interrupted by one of my six syblings.

"I came to see you little bro!" he declared as he walked in "Wait. Somethings different" He glanced around, "Where's Mary-Kate's stuff?.... Where's Mary-Kate?"

I just ignored him, lying back against my bed and staring at the cieling.

"Uh-oh. Did something happen?" Taylor asked, pulling up a chair and sitting down facing me.

"You think?" I asked sarcastically.

"Fine. If you're going to be like this I'll leave. But my guess is you really want someone to talk to and will feel worse if I leave" He stood up and waited for my answer.

I sighed and sat up "She didn't trust me. She thought I kissed Lucy-"

"Lucy? I thought you two hadn't spoken since grade school"

"I ran into her recently. Anyway she lied to Mary-Kate and Mary-Kate believed her. I sent her and Anna home so I could have time to decide what to do"

"Should you have to think about it?" He asked seriously. "Everyone makes mistakes. You love each other and have got through problems before. You can get through this too"

Maybe he's right. After all, she worked out she was wrong before I even opened my mouth to defend myself...

---Ashley---

"Mary-Kate" I whispered. I was standing outside Mary-Kate's room at like 1am at night.

I'd been sleeping in Anna's room when I was certain I saw a silhoette pass the window. Ok, so I let my imagination run wild and now I'm totally creeped out that some axe murderer is outside.

"What?" Mary-Kate whispered from her bed.

"Someones outside!" I hissed.

"So" She muttered sleepily.

"Mary-Kate!" I switched the light on and pulled the pillow out from under her head.

"What?!" She nearly screamed at me angrily.

"Sshhhhh!" I hissed, clapping a hand over her mouth.

We both heard a scratching sound outside the window and Mary-Kate's eyes widened as she finally woke up and realized what was happening.

Chapter 22:

---Josh---

I was sleeping happily. Dreaming about.... nothing important.... oh fine! Dreaming about Ashley. Yeah, yeah, Ok. I know. Well it's not like she kissed me in the dream... actually she did. But it's nothing! No repressed longing for someone I love and miss or... whatever.

Anyway, I was sleeping happily when the phone rang, and who would it be? Ashley.

Apparently there was a big bad axe murderer outside Mary-Kate's house.. or whatever. And I had to come and protect them.

Great!

I left a note for Vic who'd arrived home a few hours earlier. And then, at 2am I started the long journey to Mary-Kate's.

Yeah, well everything seems long at 2am!

---Ashley---

"Oh, Josh. I'm so glad you're here!" I threw open the front door and threw myself into his arms. He stiffened with surprise then loosed up and wrapped his arms around me.

"It's ok" He whispered into my ear, stroking my hair.

I knew Mary-Kate was standing in the doorway behind me and deep down I felt I shouldn't be holding Josh like that. I pulled back and though I wasn't sure I thought I heard him sigh sadly.

"We've made the sofa up for you to sleep on" I said, taking his hand and showing him to the room.

"Yippee! Another sofa!" He muttered sarcastically.

FastForward>

Melanie rang early the following morning. It must have been like 6am or something. Whichever it was, it was waaaaaaay earlier then I would have liked!

"Ashley, can I come live with you? Or maybe stay at Mary-Kate's till she comes back?" She asked.

"Wait, wait. What are you talking about?" I asked groggily "What about Michael?"

"We're through" She said angrily "I want to come back to New York!"

"What happened?" I asked quietly.

"I don't want to talk about it!" She almost yelled, starting to cry "Please, can I come stay with you?"

I thought quickly. Melanie could stay home with Mary-Kate and Josh and I could go home. Though technically Josh's home isn't with me, he's just staying temporarily...

"Yes, you can. But promise me you'll tell me what's going on when you get here?"

She sniffled a little "I will"

---Mary-Kate---

I slept in till 10pm. When I got up I found Ashley and Josh in the kitchen. He was drinking coffee, she was drinking milk, and the silence was deafening.

"So, what's going on?" I mumbled sleepily. I walked over to pour myself a cup of coffee too.

"Mels coming to stay" Ashley said calmly, as if it were nothing in the world and she hadn't just left the day before.

I put my cup down suddenly "What?"

"All she said was that she and Michael were over, that she didn't want to talk about it and that she's coming home" She walked over to the sink and rinsed out her cup.

Josh raised an eyebrow "That can't be good. I'm gonna go call Michael" He left the room.

"Wow" I whispered.

---Michael---

I'd spent hours searching the airport and put countless messages over the speaker. But eventually I had to accept the fact that I wasn't going to find Melanie.

Knowing her, I doubted I'd find her at home. But you can't blame a guy for hoping.

She wasn't. Neither were her things. Neither was Heather. Neither were her things.

I think I've been deserted.

Needless to say I couldn't sleep that night. By the next morning I was tired and cranky, not to mention depressed.

Josh called, and the interrogation began.

I explained how Heather kissed me at the airport, how Meanie saw it. And how I could fine her and explain what happened.

"Wow" Josh whispered. "But you two are like the perfect couple! I always wished Ashley and I could get on as well as you could!"

"Well, it looks like we're getting the perks of your relationship now." I sighed. Then I thought of something "Wait. How do you know about this, have you talked to Mel?"

He sounded uncomfortable "No"

"Josh! Save us both the time. Tell me!" I said firmly. Hey! I haven't slept! Can't blame me for being so.. eloquent.

"She spoke to Ashley, but I don't think I should be telling you this..."

"Why not?"

"Being able to trust friends to keep secrets, secret or whatever..."

"Josh! I'm your friend too! We were roomies! I beg you!"

"She's coming to New York"

"Then I am too" And with that I hung up.

---Mary-Kate---

I'd got a baby-sitter for Anna so I could go back to work immediately. Ashley was supposed to get a ride with me, but being a meddling younger sister...

"See you there Ashley!" I called, running out the door and to my car.

"Wait!" She called after me "How am I supposed to get there!"

"Josh can give you a ride" I called through the passenger side window. I smiled angelicly at them both, they both glared at me "Bye!"

Chapter 23:

---Ashley---

I muttered about Mary-Kate as Josh and I got into his car.

"She's up to something isn't she?" He asked as he backed out of the driveway.

I nodded silently as I looked out the window.

He chuckled to himself.

I turned and glared "Not funny!"

He went serious.

Great! And it's a 10 minute drive to the studio!

---Michael---

What I want to know is why everyones so stuck on travelling at Christmas?!?

Like, HONESTLY!

2 months! 2 months before ANY airline has a seat!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

---Ashley---

Ah, wonderful tension-filled silence. Isn't it just... wonderful?

Josh stopped the car outside the studio and I climbed out, "See you later" I said, slamming the door behind me.

He waved and I ran over to the front door. Having not heard the car drive away I turned and glanced back at him. He was simply sitting there, looking at me sadly.

As soon as he saw me looking he started the car and drove away.

---Melanie---

Thank God for canceled flights! Would you believe it would be two months till any airling had a spare seat?

There was just ONE Cancelation!

Thank-you! Thank-you! Whoever you are.

Hmmmm, what if the person had to get a leg amputated? Or they got stung by a bee and there face was all swollen? Or they got shot? Or.. I better stop thinking about this...

But anyway, I'm leaving San Fransisco in two hours.

Never to see it or... Michael again!!!! (I hope)

---Two days later. Mel, has explained what happened with her and Michael. She's now living with Mary-Kate---

---Ashley---

"Won't you at least talk to him?" I asked despairingly, I held out the cordless phone to Melanie but she just shook her head then walked out of the room.

I sighed and put the phone back to my ear "Sorry Michael"

There was silence on the other end of the line for a moment and then "She is being so unreasonable!"

"Off the record. I totally agree with you"

"Well, I'll call again tomorrow. Maybe she'll have grown up by then!" I could tell from his voice he was extremely mad.

"I'm sorry Michael. Bye" We hung up and I went back to the dress I'd been working on. It was looking good, even if I do say so myself.

It's strange. I can work on my designs at Mary-Kate's but at home I just.... get distracted. (AKA: Can't stop thinking about Josh's presence)

I've been getting a lot of work done, and now filming for our movies wrapped, I have more time for it.

The media hype is still pretty bad. The movie comes out in late February and things will only get worse when the publicity stuff kicks in.

Interviews. Attending movie premiers. Magazine articles..

My sister and I will once again be 100% in the public eye.

Ooops, look at the time! I came here to try to talk some reason to Melanie but somehow my free hours flew past.

Mark and I have a dinner date in half an hour.

And by dinner date I mean we chose a date to have dinner.

Nothing else.

Of course...

---Zac---

"That's it!" A determined voice declared as my bedroom door swung open with a bang.

Taylor strode in and over to the window. He swung the curtains open causing BRIGHT light to shine into the room.

"You've been hiding up here all week and it's about time you stop!" He handed me a piece of paper.

"What's this?" I asked, still shielding my eyes from the sun.

"Plane tickets for you to NYC, you arrive late Christmas eve.

"What? But, how did you get tickets? Isn't everything booked?"

"I have my ways" Taylor said with a mischevious smile.

"And a new girlfriend who works at the airport" Jessica remarked as she walked past my door.

Taylor glared at her.

I opened my mouth to argue but Taylor put up a hand to stop me "No arguments! You're going!"

I have to admit defeat..

---Josh---

Ok.... so the psychotic bad guy had the heroine hostage? But when did she get the bazooka? I thought they were in a helicopter with a broken propellor... but now they're on some California beach???

I guess with even the cheesiest of action movies it pays to pay attention. But I just can't stop thinking about Ashley on a 'dinner date' with... HIM!

It's driving me crazy!

They've been out for 3 hours! 3 HOURS!!!

Honestly! How long does it take to eat dinner? Huh? Huh?!?

I can eat mine in 5 minutes!... Sure I usually end up choking on brocolli... but hey! It only happened once!

If she isn't home in 5 minutes, I'm calling the police!!!

I am NOT being unreasonable!!!

Chapter 24:

---Ashley---

"So, we should do this again sometime" Mark declared as we walked along the hallway leading to my apartment

"Definitely" I said with a smile.

We paused momentarily outside, and before I even had a chance to wonder if he would, Mark leaned down and kissed me.

I'll be honest, it felt a little weird. I hadn't kissed a guy since Josh.

He pulled away quickly, probably cause he realized I wasn't kissing him back.

"Well,... um guess I'll see you around" He said, sticking his hands in his pockets.

"Yeah, see ya" I said with a smile. I started to walk toward the door, then stopped and turned around. I leaned up and kissed him, so quickly it seemed likeI pulled away before I started. "See ya" I repeated, as I walked inside.

I closed the door behind me, a goofy expression most likely on my face. "Who ya calling?" I asked when I managed to focus on Josh who was standing in the hallways with the phone to his ear.

He put it down guiltily "No one. How was your date?"

"Great!" I said happily, not bothering to correct the fact that he said 'date'.

---Christmas Eve---

---Mary-Kate---

"So are you taking Michaels calls yet?" I asked Mel.

She andI were at Ashleys for Christmas eve. Yes, I was with my closest friends but yet, completely and utterly alone.

"He finally stopped calling me" she forced a smile, though it was 100% obvious she wasn't as happy as she was letting on.

I glanced over at Ashley. She was sitting in a lazy boy with herlegs over the side, staring at the cieling, obviously bored.

Josh was sitting over in the corner bopping his head to the music playing on his headphones. It was the fartherest he could get from us, as of course we are in his room...well Ashley's lounge/Joshs room.

"Well!" I said with a forced cheerfulness, clapping my hands "How about we open a present?"

"But it's not Christmas yet!" Mel interjected.

"Old family tradition" Ashley supplied.

Vic walked in from the kitchen and distributed hot chocolates.

"We're opening presents!" I explained "Well, one each"

"Cool!" Vic exlaimed and skipped over to the tree.

The doorbell chimed. "I'll get it!" Ashley said as she lept up. I couldn't help but notice how Josh's eyes followed her till she left the room and were on her the moment she returned.

"Who was it?" I asked.

She looked like she was going to burst out of her skin and Josh mouthed 'Mark' with a scowl and a roll of his eyes, thinking no one was watching "Have I ever got the best present for you!" She sang, bouncing over to me "Someones here to see you!"

---Zac---

I was nervously waiting at the door when Mary-Kate finally came out. She walked into the hallway, still looking over her shoulder and saying something to someone, she finally looked over at me and froze in place.

"Hi Mary-Kate" I said quietly.

She blinked rapidly as if trying to decide if I were really there. Seeming satisfied I was, she walked over and past me, motioning for me to follow her outside.

I did, and closed the door behind me, but never once took my eyes off her.

She turned to face me "So, I'm guessing since you're here you've made your decision?" She looked so nervous I thought she'd throw up. I guess she figured there was a possibility I might want to give her a divorce.

"Yeah" I walked over to her "I want you, Anna and I to be a family again. If you'll have me"

Before I could even finish my sentence she launched herself into my arms.

"YES! YES!" She exlaimed, squeezing me so tightly it actually hurt.

I laughed and hugged her equelly tightly.

A door down the hall opened and a lady in curlers glanced out to see what all the shouting was about. She smiled when she saw us then closed the door again.

I pulled back just enough to lean down and press my lips to Mary-Kates

I don't know how I was ever so stupid as to think or even consider that I could live my life without her.

---Josh---

It was way later that night and everyone had left. Zac and Mary-Kate couldn't have looked happier, but I noticed how nervous Melanie looked, she was going to be the third wheel till she could find a place to stay.

Oh boy do I know the feeling!

I was just setting my bed up on the sofa when Ashley walked past my door to the kitchen.

We hadn't exactly talked much in the last couple of weeks. Well, we'd had 3 fights in which we both did a lot of talking... and insulting. They were such stupid things too. Arguing over the fact that I won't let her drink coffee (which she always insisted she hated anyway), debates over the toilet seat being up or down.. and fighting over the remote for the tv.

You'd think we were bickering syblings!

She says I'm always in a bad mood and looking for a fight. Though I deny it to her face... I think she's right.

I'd just finished my bed when she walked in with a cup. I raised an eyebrow accusingly.

"Don't worry! It's just hot milk" She said teasingly, as she walked over and sat down next to me on the sofa/bed. She glanced over at the remaining gifts under the tree then back at me. She grinned mischeviously.

I glanced at my watch "It's still one to midnight"

"I know... we could just... open our presents from each other?"

"You seriously can't wait to see what I got youhuh?"

She nodded angelicly.

I sighed and nodded my head slightly. She lept up and raced over to the tree, then returned with two small packages, she handed me one then sat down with the other.

"You open yours first!" She said, almost bouncing out of her chair.

"Ok" I unwrapped it and pulled out a small box. Inside was a small snow globe of Chicago. When I shook it, little heart shaped snow would fall down on the city. I smiled "It's adorable. Thanks Ashley"

"No Problem!" She smiled "Can I open mine now??"

I laughed. "Sure"

She tore off the silver wrapping paper and pulled out something wrapped in tissue paper. She unwrapped the tissue paper and something silver fell onto her leg. She picked it up "Josh it's beautiful!" She breathed.

It was a silver strand with these little glowing beadsspaced all over it like they were floating. The jewelry person called it a 'floating bead necklace'.

She was trying to put it on so I offered to do it.

She turned away from me and pulled her hair up away from her neck. I brushed a few stray strands away and once again was struck with how soft her skin was. I reached around her, stringing the necklace around her neck. Then fiddled with the clasp needlessly, for awhile. Just lingering in the moment when I was so close to her. Finally I did it up and brushed her hair back into place "Done"

She lept up and ran over to the mirror "It's so beautiful!" She declared turning from side to side to watch it change in different light "Thank-you!" She ran back over to me and threw her arms around my neck. She quickly kissed me on the cheek, causing a chill to run down my spine.

---Ashley---

Why are my lips still tingling? It's like an hour since I kissed him but this eletrical tingle is still running through my body...

Weird. It's probably just my imagination.

Chapter 25:

---Ashley---

"7, 6, 5," The crowd shouted excitedly "4, 3, 2, 1!!!!!!" Everyone cheered.

Mark spun me around in a circle then leaned down to kiss me "Happy 2009 Ashley" he said with a smile.

I smiled back then wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him some more.

To most people my life would seem perfect. Sure I'm 7 months pregnant but I'm actually kinda looking forward to being a mother. And I have a great boyfriend who's ok with the fact that I live with my soon to be ex husband. And though I fight with my ex husband a LOT I haven't killed him yet...

I don't know why. But I'm anything but happy.

---Josh---

Why am I such a loser that I have no one to spend New Years with? I'm so pitiful! Ashleys out at some party with Mark and I'm sitting at homewatching the countdown on tv!

Pitiful.

I need a girlfriend. Sigh..

---Last Days of February---

---Josh---

I'm on a business trip for my new job. Florida...

When I get home I'm moving out of Ashley's. And the other big news is that (after a big fight) Ashley signed the divorce papers.

It's 100% Official, we're divorced.

Oh man! I shouldn't let myself get distracted! The plane leaves in 10 minutes! I have no clue if I can get there in time!!!!

Please don't let me be late! Please don't let me be late!

---Mary-Kate---

I guess I'm still in shock. I always hoped Ashley and Josh would get back together. I'm still hoping and I can't help it. I don't like MARK!!!

But anyway, Josh is in Floriday, and by all appearance, Ashley hasn't even noticed he's gone!

I don't believe people who truly love each other ever stop. And I believe Ashley and Josh truly love each other..

But anyway I should stop obsessing about it as Zac said. I'll just make myself ill.

But it's so tempting! I'm at Ashleys right now and I really want to talk to her.

"Man, it's blowing a gale out there!" Ashley said as she walked in from the kitchen. "Look out there!" She said, motioning to the window.

Even though it was officially spring tomorrow it was snowing to the extent of a blizzard.

"Maybe you should spend the night"

"You're right. I don't want to drive in this. I'll call Zac"

A few moments later I returned from the phone. I must have looked really pale cause Ashley immediately asked what was wrong.

"When was Josh flying back?" I asked.

"Tonight. But don't worry. I can set up a cot for you in my room"

I barely heard her as I searched for the remote and switched on the tv. "Zac was watching the news and said a place from Florida Crashed"

Ashley sat up straight "What?!"

I finally found the right channel and we listened to the anchor woman tell how the evenings only flight out of Florida had crashed on the outskirts of NYC. 'It is believed there were no survivors" the reporter concluded.

I turned to Ashley who had turned white as a sheet.

"Ashley" I started, but she put a hand up to stop me "It can't be true" She whispered.

"Ashley-"

"It can't be!" she screamed leaping to her feet "I don't believe it!" she started to pace around the room and I could do nothing but watch "I won't believe it!"

She stopped pacing and stared at the tv. The news station was playing the image of a plane crashing in a big fireball.

Ashley started to shake as she watched it. "No" She whispered. "I...I...can't believe it"

And, suddenly, as if somebody had knocked her feet out from under her, she collapsed in a ball on the floor, sobbing loudly.
