![]() Dressed in the black organza jacket and tulle and lace skirt which she wore to the premiere of her film Hey Hey It's Esther Blueburger in Sydney last week, Castle-Hughes was warmly applauded as she walked down an improvised catwalk at an intimate show held at the Croatian Culture Society in West Auckland. Looking slim and happy 10 months after the birth of daughter Felicity-Amore, Castle-Hughes described the floaty outfit as being "every little girl's dream". She and her daughter will be back on a plane this morning heading to France, where the 17-year-old star will work on an film adaptation of the Elizabeth Knox novel The Vintner's Luck with Niki Caro, who also directed Whale Rider.

![]() In real life, however, stardom has not brought Castle-Hughes unalloyed joy. New Zealand is a small country, rendered smaller in the media by its committed provincialism. To be famous there is to be very famous indeed. She was a household name before Whale Rider was even released - which was, as it happened, on the same day Castle-Hughes began high school. And if that doesn't sound entirely hellish, think back to the age of 12 yourself. "It was weird," Castle-Hughes says now, "because I had no friends at the school I went to, really. I got there and everyone already had these expectations of who you are and what you are before they've even given you a chance. They don't even say hello. [They] just say, 'Oh well, she's a snob; she's this or that.' And you think, 'Well, you wouldn't even talk to me, so how would you know?' It was hard."

"My whole family [moved here] with me: my mum and her [new] partner and four younger siblings, who went to school," she says. "Everyone wanted to do it except my brother, who is 15. He didn't really enjoy moving schools, being a 15-year-old boy." Castle-Hughes has had more responsibility than your average teenager - and not just in movies. She turns 18 this month and has a 10-month-old daughter, Felicity-Amore, with her partner, Bradley Hull, 21. It might seem strange to be talking to her about portraying 13-year-old Sunni in Esther Blueberger but she makes it work because her character is an old head on young shoulders, very much like herself.

The Academy Award nominee, in town to promote her new film Hey Hey It's Esther Blueburger, seriously wants the top job in her home, New Zealand. "I want to be a politician and maybe one day I will be (Prime Minister)," she said yesterday. Enrolled to begin a political science degree next year, the ambitious young mum is keen on doing her bit to save the world. "I am not the last of my generation, so we need to save the world for everybody else because while the world has been here for forever in the last 50 years we have managed to really screw it up."

“I had friends and everything but I didn’t know what group I fit into and you feel confused because you feel like you should fit into a group. “There’s no cure, as such, for being 13. But (one day) you just stop being so hormonal and it’s finished.”

Stepping out in Sydney for the Australian premiere of Hey Hey It's Esther Blueburger yesterday, the young celebrity mum, 17, defended her position as a role model for girls after falling pregnant at 16. "I have a job to do and there are other things that come with it that you don't sign up for," Castle-Hughes told film writer Erin McWhirter at the Westfield Bondi Junction screening."I respect other people's opinions and decisions and I hope that they respect mine." The Whale Rider actress, who was born in Western Australia and moved to New Zealand at four, admitted she was shocked at the public backlash she received over her pregnancy. Now, happily playing mum to her 11-month-old daughter Felicity Amore with long-term boyfriend Bradley Hull, the actress says no amount of controversy could spoil her role as a mum. "It's amazing I have learned so much and I am so much happier. The happiest I have ever been. I can't even imagine I existed before becoming a mother," Castle-Hughes said. In Hey Hey It's Esther Blueburger, Castle-Hughes plays effortlessly cool girl Sunni opposite big screen newcomer Danielle Catanzariti in the title role - a teenager on the quest to fit in.

"Christmas Day for us is totally about family. There are 11 of us, not counting the grandparents. We've had this tradition ever since I can remember where we give each other a scroll on which we've written what we like about that person. Felicity will get her first scroll this year. There's always been a lot of love in my family, but it doesn't just happen by accident. You have to put in some effort."

A coming-of-age comedy that explores what it's really like to be an outsider in your own world. Esther is not like other girls; she befriends a duck, talks to God through the toilet and break-dances at her Bat Mitzvah. Her all-girls private school is a daily torment of mind-numbing conformity and bell-ringing rituals. Home is a pressure cooker driven by her mother Grace's demand for perfection. But life changes when Esther meets Sunni and her mother Mary. She learns that it's OK to be different and being true to yourself is more important than fitting in.

For Castle-Hughes it is about what she likes rather than the label. When I complimented her on a striking blue and white striped dress she wore to Sera Lilly's show, she confessed she had raided it from her mothers wardrobe. Only in New Zealand.

Teenage actress Keisha Castle-Hughes said she was made to feel guilty about her pregnancy, spoiling what should have been a celebratory time. Giving her first formal interview in two years, Castle-Hughes told New Zealand's Sunday program on TV One that she was shocked when she found out she was pregnant at age 16. However, although now only 17, she felt ready to have a baby, she said. "If it wasn't meant to happen now, it wouldn't have happened now." Read full story: Here

Pregnant teen movie star Keisha Castle-Hughes - who plays the Virgin Mary in blockbuster The Nativity Story - was caught up in an Easter week row with a paparazzi photographer. The Kiwi actress was shopping with family and friends in Auckland's trendy suburb of Newmarket on Wednesday when they spotted a freelance photographer snapping them. Keisha, 17 - who became a Hollywood darling for her childhood leading role in Whale Rider showed her displeasure with a middle-finger gesture. And an outraged woman and teenage boy from her party then turned the table on the photographer, approaching him and attempting to take cellphone photos of the celebrity cameraman. An onlooker told Sunday News the boy also took a kick at the photographer's camera. "The woman walked up and had a real go at me, trying to take cellphone pictures of me," said the freelance photographer, who asked not to be named. "They wanted to know my name, I wouldn't tell them. A French actor who plays the demonic Hannibal Lecter in a new film about the serial killer's early days is set to play the angel in Niki Caro's adaptation of Elizabeth Knox's The Vintner's Luck. While promoting the new movie Hannibal Rising, actor Gaspard Ulliel, 22, revealed he will play the angel Xas in The Vintner's Luck, to be shot in France and New Zealand. Ulliel, who has starred in several French films including A Very Long Engagement, told website moviesonline.com the role would be the opposite of playing Lecter. "I'm playing a guardian angel ... It's a nice, small story." Ulliel said other stars would include fellow French actor Jeremie Renier, 26, as the winemaker of the title, and American Vera Farmiga, 33, who recently had a part in Martin Scorsese's Oscar-nominated The Departed. The Dominion Post also understands Keisha Castle-Hughes, who became an international star after she was cast in Caro's Whale Rider, will have a part in the film. The Vintner's Luck is set in 19th-century France and tells the story of winemaker Sobran Jodeau, who finds an angel in his vineyard. Caro confirmed that she had cast Ulliel, Renier and Farmiga, but would not comment further. Wellington author Knox said she was very happy with the casting. By coincidence, she had seen Renier in the French film Brotherhood of the Wolf and e-mailed photographs of him to Caro. "I got very excited," she said. "Jeremie Renier is fantastic." Source: Stuff |
